Ayushman Bharat 2.0: President Murmu’s Vision for a Healthier India
In her ceremonial address, President Murmu described health and well-being as the “central pillars of human capital development.” She revealed that the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has already delivered over 11 crore free hospital treatments since its inception.
The “2.0” phase of the mission is characterized by three major shifts: targeted senior care, digital integration, and specialized regional infrastructure.
1. The “Vay Vandana” Revolution for Seniors
The biggest update in Ayushman Bharat 2.0 is the inclusion of all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of their income.
- Ayushman Vay Vandana Cards: Over the last 18 months, nearly 1 crore cards have been issued to the elderly.
- Impact: Approximately 8 lakh senior citizens have already received free inpatient hospital treatment under this new expansion.
- Top-up Benefit: Seniors in families already covered under PM-JAY receive an additional ₹5 lakh top-up exclusively for their use.
2. Strengthening the “Arogya Mandir” Network
Primary healthcare is being moved closer to homes through the renaming and upgrading of Health and Wellness Centres.
- Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM): There are now 1.80 lakh operational centres across India.
- Role: These centres provide last-mile delivery of primary care, diagnostic services, and free essential drugs, especially in rural and underserved tribal areas.
3. Mission-Mode Disease Elimination
The President highlighted how the government is fighting “decisive battles” against specific diseases using the Ayushman framework.
- Sickle Cell Anaemia: Under the National Elimination Mission, over 6.5 crore citizens have been screened to date.
- Trachoma-Free India: Murmu proudly noted that the WHO has officially declared India free from the eye disease Trachoma in 2026.
- Japanese Encephalitis: Mission-mode campaigns have led to effective control of this disease in rural Uttar Pradesh and other endemic districts.
4. Massive Healthcare Push in the Northeast
Ayushman Bharat 2.0 isn’t just about insurance; it’s about physical infrastructure in regions that were previously overlooked.
- New Institutions: A State Cancer Institute in Itanagar, medical colleges in Sivasagar (Assam) and Sichey (Sikkim), and a dedicated Women and Children’s hospital in Agartala were highlighted as key achievements.
